Viticulture

Tradition

Viticulture has a tradition in Riehen, dating back over 1,200 years. It became particularly important between the 16th and 18th century, when Basel's wealthy began to purchase estates here for viticulture. In its heyday in 1770, the area devoted to vineyards spanned around 70 hectares, but gradually declined over the centuries. At its lowest point, only 0.4 hectares were used for vineyards. Thanks to the commitment of the municipality of Riehen, around 4 hectares are now dedicated to viticulture again. The grape varieties Pinot Noir and Riesling-Sylvaner are mainly grown here.

Vineyards

Two viticulture enterprises manage the vineyards around Riehen. Weingut Riehen was run by the municipality itself until 2013 and is now privately owned. Besides the typical varieties, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay are also cultivated here. The second private winery is Wyguet Rinkin. Its selection of wines encompasses various white, rosé and red wines, as well as sparkling wine and spirits.
