Many different people have left their mark in Riehen: Neanderthals and Romans as well as knights, bishops and Basel patricians. The latter acquired land here after the City of Basel purchased the village of Riehen in 1522. Even at the beginning of the 20th century, Riehen was still a secluded farming village with farm houses and gardens owned by Basel's wealthy families. It was not until after the Second World War that Riehen became an emerging municipality, now counting around 21,000 residents.
