Museum Kultur & Spiel Riehen (MUKS)

Reopened in summer 2021, the Museum of Culture & Play MUKS places people and their actions at the centre of focus. The exhibitions «Village» and «Play»  trace human activities, such as «Living», «Household», «Working», «Dreaming», and «Fighting». Here visitors can immerse themselves into past life and draw connections to their own experiences. The yard and the newly designed historic garden invite you to play and linger. MUKS invites to participate and is aimed at families with children as well as grandparents with grandchildren.

MUKS is located in the historic Wettsteinhaus in the village centre. It was built by the mayor of Basel, Johann Rudolf Wettstein (1594−1666). Wettstein is still well-known for achieving the de-facto independence of Switzerland from the Holy Roman Empire in the Treaty of Westphalia. As the most prominent resident, Wettstein comes to life in the various stations integrated into the new permanent exhibition.
