Riehen has something in store for everyone: high-class art, culture from all eras, attractive estates, inspiring nature walks, modern architecture and a diverse history. Once a month we offer thematic guided “à point” tours in and around Riehen, led by interesting personalities. The tours are generally held in German. 

For your eyes only - Riehens hidden art treasures

Riehen is in possession of a considerable amount of art, adding up to about 900 works of divers art genres. The community hall hosts quite a few treasures in its lobbies, corridors, meeting rooms and offices. For this tour it opens its doors and the door to the art deposit so we can have a look at some of them together.

at the old Wettsteubhaus the bourgeois way of living of the 17th century meets modern arts and cultural mediation: once a stately home, the heritage-protected building houses the toy, village and vineyard museum since almost 50 years.
From February 2020 on the museum closes its doors for a year; there'll be a renovation, a smooth conversion and the preparation of two new permanent exhibitions. The rooms will be emptied of objects and cabinets which makes way for a viewing and a reflection over historic and modern views and ideas.
In close dialogue with the head of museum and the consultant of building nd historic preservation you will get to know exciting facts about the house, through the ages and about the precious objects and stories that will be shown in the 21st century.

Architecture for everybody
On May 16th and 17th 2020 many doors of outstanding structures should have been open to the public for the third time in a row in both cantons of Basel, and Riehen would have taken part in it. Due to the Coronavirus the event is now postponed to the Sat/Sun, 24th/25th April 2021.
Then you'll be invited to take a look behind the facades of exciting historic and modern buildings. In Riehen  you can visit for example the Movable House and the Wenkenhof, Riehen's magnificent country estate.

Riehen borders on Germany. What effect does the border have on the life of people living in the area? Has its meaning changed in the course of time? What does «declaring» mean, were there and are there smugglers in Riehen and why? And why is it that car drivers opened their tank cap without actually refuelling?
This tour answers these and more questions about the border, customs and smuggling and take you on an exciting trip through time, along and over the border!

Cancelled due to the Coronavirus: 20 years of HillChill Openair - A glimpse behind the festival-scenes

What started 20 years ago with a spontaneous concert at the Sarasinpark has become an essential part of cultural life in Riehen over the years. The festival is organized entirely voluntarily by young people and draws thousands of visitors to Riehen on the last weekend of June. It's a symbol for youth culture and the significance Riehen attaches to music. in this tour the festival organizers look back on 20 years of HillChill-history, describe the voluntary structures and give a tour across the festival-grounds. Enjoy the atmosphere, have an aperitif offered by the Kulturbüro Riehen and stay for a concert - or two.


  • Registration: The tour is open for a maximimum of 20 people, registration until 15th of June via:
